"Almost half (46%) of Australians over the age of 15 lack the literacy skills they need to meet the demands of everyday life and work (ABS 2006)
Reading aloud to children is the single most important activity for building the skills and knowledge required for literacy. Many Australian children do not have access to reading material that will enhance their ability to learn to read.
We are passionate about the power of reading and developing a love of literature. We believe that teaching children to read is a key to breaking the intergenerational poverty cycle in Australia and the rest of the world. Children's Literacy Gift is an independent, not-for-profit, charitable organisation based in Melbourne, Australia.
We envision a world where all children have the right to learn how to read and have access to adequate reading material. Reading changes lives and opens up endless possibilities.
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the World"
Approximately 65% of Indigenous Australians have low level literacy skills (Literacy for Life Foundation 2016)
We are giving the gift of reading to children. If you can make a child fall in love with books , we can change their lives forever. With our Reading Around Projects we establish reading corners in kindergartens and primary schools who currently have limited resources. We are focusing on providing Australia picture story books to create welcoming spaces for children to engage with books and develop their literacy so they fall in love with reading.
"The fire of literacy is created by the emotional sparks between a child, a book, and the person reading" Mem Fox
Books can do so much more than become landfill or just sit on a bookshelf never being used. Our book drive project is to collect a selection of Australian story books to distribute to disadvantaged children, families, schools and kindergartens throughout Australia.
It is our hope that these books will spark a love of literature and promote reading aloud with children.
